Scenes from Ralph Bakshi's Wizards

With a soundtrack by some adventure metal outfit.

Ralph Bakshi is one of my all-time favorite people & someone responsible for shaping my world-view. His Wizards is one of the greatest movies ever made & expresses some very complicated concepts about art.

Elinor Langer: The Rise of the Neo-Nazi Movement in America

Interesting talk from Elinor Langer on what seems to me to be the central event in America's understanding of "hate crimes". She talks about Oregon's racial history, which is also illuminating.

Mussolini Monday: recipe time!

Found this recipe for Spaghetti Mussolini today:

* 250 g spaghetti
* 2 cups vegetable oil, for deep frying
* 1 medium eggplant or 300 g, peeled and cut into large cubes
* 350 g chicken liver, cut into cubes
* 250 g minced beef
* 1 sachet MAGGI® Bolognaise Mix
* 3 cups water or 750 ml
* 2 tablespoons tomato paste
* 1 cup mozzarella cheese or 100 g, shredded

Boil spaghetti in salted boiling water for 10 minutes, cool under cold water. Drain and set aside.

Reserve 2 tablespoons of oil aside and heat the remaining oil in a pan. Deep fry the eggplant cubes and then the chicken liver, set aside on a plate lined with kitchen paper to absorb the oil.

Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large pot, fry minced meat until it becomes golden brown in color. Add MAGGI® Bolognaise Mix , water and tomato paste. Bring to boil and cook on low heat with occasional stirring for 10 minutes. Add the fried egg plant, fried chicken liver and the cooked pasta. Stir all in the sauce and pour in an oven tray and flatten evenly.

Sprinkle the top with the shredded mozzarella cheese.

Cook in preheated oven on a 200°C for 20-25 minutes or until cheese becomes golden in color.

Peace & Harmony Breakfast Pizza

Some more hilarity from "Wasted in the Keys". Yah dude, give up your day job & start doing comedy! Although this is funnier when people don't get it.
"I ate and made the awesome Peace and Harmony Breakfast Pizza that my grandpa used to make when he was a cook in the German Army during World War Two. When my grandpa was stuck in Belarus while serving as a cook in the German Army during World War Two, he would come up with all these neat new ideas for meals with using only limited ingredients. There were a lot of potato farmers in Belarus for the soldiers to steal from, so the soldiers would take potatoes, flour, eggs, cheese, and bacon from their farms. My grandpa would turn the potatoes into hashbrowns and use the leftovers for this Peace and Harmony Breakfast Pizza. My grandpa would mix the eggs in a M1940 Stahlhelm and pour it on the pizza dough and then put the rest of the ingredients on top of the eggs. This Peace and Harmony Breakfast Pizza became a favorite of the Wehrmacht and Heinrich Himmler."

swastika quilts

With any art form that relies on repetition of geometric shapes, you're bound to see a swastika pop up now and then. Here are some antique swastika quilts:

Peace & Harmony Pizza

The text accompanying this pizza is almost too hilarious for me to handle.
"When my grandpa was stuck in Poland while serving as a cook in the German Army during World War Two, he would come up with all these new neat ideas for meals with using only limited ingredients. There was a lot of Kielbasa Sausage around that the soldiers would steal from the Polish Butchers. The soldiers also had a lot of smoked Pepperoni that Hitler got from Mussolini. So, with these limited ingredients, and cheese and flour taken at gunpoint from area farms, my grandpa would come up with these great masterpieces. Well anyway, my wonderful grandpa gave me this recipe for Peace and Harmony Pizza. My parents used to make this pizza for me when I was a kid for my birthday parties, but for some weird reason, my friends stopped coming to my birthday parties. I bet it was because they were just jealous that they could not make pizza as good as this. "

Inglourious Basterds - short review

We finally just went & rented Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, after having it at the top of our netflix cue for MONTHS. As a piece of movie-making craft, it's great. Great shots, good acting, lots of good dialog, exciting violence, well-crafted action, that sort of thing. Funnily or not funnily enough, i have the same problem with this one of his movies that i have with his other movies which is his "aestheticization of violence", which i don't have a problem with, but apparently i don't like it when Tarantino does it. I find his treatment of violence off-putting. Anyhow, the movie is a Jewish revenge vehicle, with guiltless slaughter of the Nazis as a central element of the entertainment. As i do not hate Nazis, nor do i even fantasize about the brutal killing of my enemies, real or imagined, i felt that the team of American Jewish soldiers led by Brad Pitt were actually portrayed as worse people than the Nazis if i didn't already come into the movie with the prejudice towards the Nazis. Because of this, i was left with zero characters that i was rooting for, although the SS investigator was the most interesting & well-played role in the movie. Brad Pitt seemed like a miss-cast & his accent was atrocious. This was definitely one of Tarantino's better movies, & it left me feeling less ill than all the others, but there is still something unsettling about his treatment of violence that makes it difficult for me to enjoy his work. I also wonder when someone will cast a Hitler who "feels right".

Panzer IV Ausf G V.1, originally uploaded by Hessianizer.

Every time i buy another Playmobil or Lego set for the boys, i wonder where the WWI & WWII sets are. These would be incredible, educational, beyond interesting & have an enormous built in market of purchasers. This guy Hessianizer has made a German tank. Fantastic!

You're No Hitler: Ronald McDonald

The industrialized slaughter of countless animals combined with the garish totalitarian aesthetic of the McDonalds corporation often draws connections between Ronald McDonald & Hitler, of course, Hitler was a vegetarian. (or was he?)

Punk & the Swastika: John John Jesse

Found a fun studio visit to Punk Rock artist John John Jesse's new digs on Fecal Face this morning. A while back i had been developing a theory about Catholicism, Imperialism, Nazi Theatre, Rock & Roll & finally NYC & English 1977 Punk. This whole thing was catalyzed by Italian American, NYC native Johnny Thunders, with the concept of rock & roll guitarist as SS officer & refined by his subsequent clones. John John Jesse takes this whole shtick into the visual arts realm, using cute girls as a Trojan Horse for lots of more interesting aesthetic concepts.
