Yesterday, my buddy Bert “Gatchabert” Gatchalian tweeted a custom figure that was supposed to be a secret for the upcoming Red Carpet Kaiju show at TAG. I’m glad he decided to reveal it, as in my opinion, it’s one of the show’s early standout figures (in a stellar all-star lineup), and I’ve been thinking about it since he showed it to me.

If this figure looks familiar, you may recognize it as Robin the Mad Boy/Nazi Boy by Zollmen, previously explored in “When Custom Toys Get Controversial“. With this custom, Bert one-ups the controversy by giving a Nazi production toy a custom Prop 8 makeover. What am I talking about? I’ll let Bert tell you:

The news about Prop 8 being unconstitutional [came out], and then some idiot says that gay marriage is still not allowed. I won’t really get into it, but the look on the Nazi Boy’s face seemed appropriate for the whole issue and so I turned this guy into something else. I filed down the swastika…and sprayed the whole thing black. [I] placed down some silver accents and some pink and fluorescent pink details and finished him off with a coat of pearl finish to give him some glitter. Joy Boy was born. Joy Boy doesn’t care for Prop 8 and wants to just go around spreading love to all in his glittery outfit. He still wears the helmet to keep his head safe…cause all guys need to wear helmets from time to time.

Bert’s right, you know. The pink helmet in this custom is a fitting double entendre for safer sex, especially when viewing the figure’s head from behind. The name “Joy Boy” is also subject to multiple interpretations. In this context, “joy” can be read as “gay,” and/or as an allusion to Joy Division, a term for the group of Jewish women forced to work as prostitutes in Nazi Concentration camps. The name was later picked up by seminal post-punk band Joy Division, whose singer committed suicide 1980. Joy Boy’s all-black attire references the legions of goths left behind in Ian Curtis’ wake…

Zollmen makes some really madcap toys, and Gatchabert’s take on Nazi Boy really delivers on the original figure’s rather vague politics. Anybody who’s been following Prop 8 has undoubtedly mirrored Joy Boy’s exasperated expression. According to the artist, though, JB is a peaceful fellow. Quoth Bert: “Don’t run Nazi Boy, Joy Boy just wants to hug you.” Overall, an awesome job from concept to completion. I love a toy that makes a statement. Keep making them, and I’ll keep writing about ‘em!

Born as Fittan Pölzl in the Austrian village of Spital, Weitra, she was the mother of Adolf Hitler and daughter of Johanna Hiedler. Either her grandfather Johann Nepomuk Hiedler or his brother were also likely to be Alois' biological father. Moreover, Johann was her future husband's step-uncle. Even after they were married Klara still called her husband, Alois "Uncle". She first came to work for Alois at the age of 16 as a housekeeper. After the death of his second wife, Alois and Klara were married on 7 January 1885 during a brief wedding held early in the morning at Hitler's rented rooms on the top floor of the Pommer Inn in Braunau, before Alois went to work for the day. Four months later, their first son Gustav was born on 15 May 1885. Ida followed on 23 September 1886. Both infants died of diphtheria during the winter of 1886-1887. A third child, Otto, was born and died in 1887. Adolf was born 20 April 1889, followed by Edmund on 24 March 1894 and Paula on 21 January 1896. Edmund died of measles on 28 February 1900, at the age of five. Klara's adult life was devoted to keeping house and raising children, for which, according to Smith, Alois had limited interest. Only two of Klara's children, Adolf and Paula, survived childhood. Alice Miller writes of their family life: "The family structure could well be characterized as the prototype of a totalitarian regime. Its sole, undisputed, often brutal ruler is the father. The wife and children are totally subservient to his will, his moods, and his whims; they must accept humiliation and injustice unquestioningly and gratefully. Obedience is their primary rule of conduct." Klara Hitler was a devout Roman Catholic and attended church regularly with her children. When her husband died in 1903, he left her a government pension along with some property. As a result she was adequately provided for financially, as were her children. However, four years after the death of her husband, Klara died from iodoform poisoning from the treatment of breast cancer, aged 47, in Linz, Austria, with her children, Adolf and Paula, at her side. She is buried in Leonding near Linz. Adolf Hitler had a close relationship with her, and was devastated by her death; he would carry the grief at her passing with him for the rest of his life. Hitler's gratitude to her Jewish doctor, Eduard Bloch, for his efforts to help his mother later led him to allow Bloch and his wife to emigrate in 1940 from Austria to the United States.

An Austrian pastry maker faces a criminal investigation for baking cakes with elaborate Nazi designs, a concentration camp survivors' group said after pressing charges on Tuesday.

The Mauthausen Committee says the bakery, located in the village of Maria
Enzersdorf near Vienna, offers cakes adorned with a sugary swastika or with a baby raising its right hand in a Nazi salute, pictures in his catalogue show. Pastry chef Manfred Klaschka told broadcaster ORF at his cafe said "If someone orders it, I make it." Willi Mernyi, the chairman of the survivors' group Mauthausen Committee said in response that "this is exactly the sort of thinking led us into the disaster 70 years ago." The group pressed charges on suspicion that the chef violated laws that ban neo-Nazi activities and the display of Nazi symbols. Austrian law bans the glorification of the Nazi era and attempts to diminish, deny or justify the Holocaust. The Holocaust awareness group asked Austrian prosecutors to press charges against the pastry shop, and Erich Habitzl, a spokesman for the public prosecutor's office in Wiener Neustadt, confirmed receipt of the group's request Tuesday but said it was too
early to comment.

Voodoo Doughnuts, famous for making donuts with names like; "Triple Chocolate Penetration", "Maple Blazer Blunt", "Cock & Balls", "Butterfingering" & the "Diablos Rex", a donut emblazened with a pentagram has banned PORK magazine from all three of its locations stating, "Some of the contraversal (sic) content/nature in your zine is something that we do not wish to put our customers through." PORK, which has been described by soccer moms as "an edgy teenybopper magazine", is apparently too edgy for this 90s donut establishment.

John Galliano has spent more than five hours at a French police station being questioned about an alleged drunken rant in a Paris bar, in which he was said to have hurled racist and antisemitic abuse. His future as creative director of Christian Dior looked increasingly doubtful as video footage emerged of an apparently separate incident in which he is seen saying: "I love Hitler". Galliano, 50, wearing a large-brimmed black hat over his trademark bandana, arrived at the police station in the central 3rd arrondissement of Paris where he came face to face with the couple he is accused of accosting at La Perle bar in the chic Marais district last Thursday. The couple, a Jewish woman and her Asian boyfriend, told French radio Europe 1 the British designer had told them: "Dirty Jewish face, you should be dead" and "fucking Asian bastard, I will kill you". After last week's incident Galliano's lawyer, Stéphane Zerbib, said the designer was lodging a police complaint against the couple for "defamation, insults, threats and aggression". "This man and woman were aggressive to Galliano, mocking the way he looked. My client was insulted first and never made antisemitic remarks." The designer has denied making racist or antisemitic comments. A second woman came forward at the weekend claiming a separate incident took place in the same bar in October. A police source told Le Parisien the 48-year-old was at first "surprised by John Galliano's attitude and the fact he had a go at her apparently without any reason". "She said the designer was in a drunken state. She is sure about the nature of the insults because she speaks and understands English well," the source added. Just so you know, another goal of the Daily Hitler, outside of exploring Hitler & the NAZIs are pop culture characters, is the liberation of the swastika. Yes it is instantly recognizable to Westerners as the NAZI symbol, however, the NAZIs are a small blip on the historical map compared to the swastika's use in religions like Hiduism, Buddhism & Jainism & as a symbol of luck & good fortune in pretty much every culture. Even as the NAZIs used the swastika, it didn't stand for "hate" or "evil", it stood for the idea that the Aryans came from India & were thus represented by this very Indian symbol, which they decided was the symbol of the German race.

Italy revives Mussolini's 'Blackshirt' vigilantes as fears of Fascism sparks investigation

An investigation has been launched after a new Italian vigilante group unveiled a uniform that brought back echoes of the dark days of Fascism. The Italian National Guard is one of many vigilante groups that will be sanctioned to start anti-crime foot patrols once a controversial security bill has been passed. But the group became the centre of a political storm when it emerged that their kit bears a striking resemblance to Italian dictator Benito Mussolini's notorious Blackshirt volunteer militia.

Prosecutors immediately opened an investigation into the group because of the similarity to the black and brown Fascist uniforms worn during the 1930's by sympathisers in Italy and Germany.
The new law, which is expected to pass easily in the Senate this week, allows vigilantes to alert police to public order offences or suspected criminals, but do not have the power of arrest. These groups have sprung up in several Italian cities, especially in the northern strongholds of the right wing, anti-immigrant Northern League. But controversy was sparked when the Italian National Guard revealed its uniform in Milan at the weekend. Members will wear a khaki shirt, black cap featuring a rampant eagle insignia, 18 hole leather boots, Latin motto and armbands bearing a black sunwheel very similar to a Nazi swastika.

A source at the prosecutor's office in Milan where the inquiry was opened said: 'Many of the symbols on the uniforms such as the Latin insignia and the eagles look very Fascist inspired and so it warrants investigation.' But it hasn't hindered the growth of the Italian National Guard, which claims to already have 2,500 recruits, many of them drawn from the police and Armed Forces. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, whose centre right wing coalition was elected on a tough law and order campaign, has insisted that vigilante groups, such as the Italian National Guard, would be simple 'citizen patrols'. The group is based in Turin, but has offices in the south of Italy in Puglia and Calabria as well as on the island of Sicily. Many Italians blame the country's growing crime rate on illegal immigrants and especially Romany gypsies and see the 'ronde' or vigilante patrols as a necessary course of action. Marco Minniti, from the opposition centre left, described the situation as 'disconcerting delirium'. 'Entrusting the security of the country to political groups like this is a blow to the very heart of democracy,' he said. Other opposition MP's called for the government to change the law and outlaw the vigilante groups as a result of the Fascist overtones. But Interior Minister Roberto Maroni has given them his backing. 'Let's call them vigilante groups - if that's what we want,' Mr Maroni said. 'We have been accused of wanting to return to the era of the Blackshirts but we are simply giving the people a chance to participate in their security.' Maurizio Monti, vice president of the Italian National Guard, said: 'We are a properly resgistered group and we will continue until someone can prove that we have broken a crime. 'The imperial eagle has been a symbol since the Roman times and so it's absurd to say it has anything to do with Fascism - if that is the case then all the monuments of Rome bearing the eagle should be pulled down. 'The Italian National Guard is nothing to do with Fascism - Fascism has been confined to history.' The bill will also make illegal immigration a criminal offence, will extend to six months the period immigrants and would-be asylum seekers can be kept in detention centers and sets a maximum three-year jail term for landlords who rent to illegal immigrants. The Blackshirts were Fascist paramilitaries created by Mussolini and also inspired the British Union of Fascists led Sir Oswald Mosley. Their methods became harsher as Mussolini's power grew, using violence, torture, gang rape, intimidation, and murder against political opponents - one of their distinctive techniques was force-feeding castor oil.

This French girl's haircut and pose has made a very popular picture. The image title, the symbol, the historical reference is fascinating to many. Let me tell you now, I feel sad for Nazis, Fascists, White Supremacists, Fundamentalist and all who misguidedly associate themselves with the type of social pathology that the Swastika, in our modern world, represents. By doing so, they doing a disservice to intelligence, civilization and universal life. I oppose the illusion of differing races. I abhor any type of Nationalism, ethnocentrism, xenophobia, religious exclusivity or authoritarianism. I delight in the multi-cultural experience I've gained through living in California and New York and through my travels. I've benefited greatly from my curiosity which has lead me to discover the cultures of the world through people I have befriended.
When I was a Punkrock Radio DJ in the late '70s and was able to participate in punk shows and enjoy the friendship of younger punkrockers, I met some who used the ancient Indian broken-cross symbol as appropriated and called "swastika" by Hitler. I understood the kids' use of the symbol to be an rebellious act, primarily aimed at alarming the mainstream culture. Generally, it seemed punkrockers had little historical perspective and I did not think their use was political. I thought their use would redefine the symbol's meaning for future generations. I was naive and mistaken about this.
At that time and since, many goof-ball leaders continued to gather followers through misusing this ancient and beautiful symbol, embracing the deployable racial-political ideas of German Nazis.
The picture was taken at a Rat Productions' New Year's Eve show in 10th Street Hall, San Francisco, ringing in the new year of 1981. The bands included Johnny Genocide's "No Alternative" who played in front of a wall-size Confederate flag. The girl with the hair cut was small, French and arrived late. All attention was on her entrance, the spectacle of her head design parted the awestruck crowd. She found a group of friends, who surrounded her, exclaiming, in French, their amazement and admiration for the newly created doo. It was a spectacular hair design, the scalp shaved, leaving short hair in the swastika shape dyed in square patches of orange and black, outlined with white makeup on the scalp. We all had our breath taken away.
I correctly recognized that her head was the most iconic visual of the evening. After an hour, as she passed near me on her way out, I pulled out my pocket camera, asked her, in English, for permission to photograph her. She sighed in exasperation, took a step back, brought her hand to her mouth, tilted down her head into the pose you see here. After the one shot, she continued out.
Despite the symbol's association with appalling social attitudes, disastrous politics and despicable genocidal fantasies, this picture of a hair design, a small girl's pose has remained my favorite image from my days as a punkrock photographer

If Hitler could squeeze into David Hasselhoff’s speedos, how would he be? An inflammatory proposal explored in the play called Hitlerhoff, is marching in to create a potential Fuhrer [sic] during this year’s Melbourne Fringe Festival. Creative producer Tom Doig said he believes the miscreant Nazi leader and the ironically cool pop culture icon have much in common. “They’re both huge in Germany,” said Doig, whose supervisor warned him off the idea for his Masters in creative writing at Melbourne University. “They were both popular but know no one will admit they like them. They both have huge egos, not necessarily that much talent but lots of willpower.” Under the sub-heading “Two wrongs don’t make a Reich”, the show finds the modern Frankenstein hanging out with lefty hippies at Vienna Beach. Following a nervous breakdown he becomes an instant overnight celebrity and super powerful revolutionary figure. Hitlerhoff is potentially offensive, admits Doig. Doig said that although he understands that the Holocaust is very much a sensitive issue, Hitler should not be beyond the reaches of satire.

Bizarre subject in for satire

“I think it’s saying something quite profound about culture, I don’t want it all to get lost in this guy with a cheeseburger down his speedos. “I want it to be a crazy image that makes people think about the heart of darkness within popular culture. “It’s the kind of culture where you’re encouraged to put yourself first and believe in yourself no matter what. “It’s that quite banal, self-help motivational talk which is totally central to the success of Hitler and the horror it generated, and Hasselhoff and the tackiness it generated.” Melbourne Fringe Festival advised Doig against incorporating a swastika into his show promos because the neo-Nazi overtones might affect the show’s appeal. “Whilst we acknowledge it’s an area that will be potentially controversial and potentially confronting for some, our festival is about cutting-edge arts where you are going to get a sophisticated dissection of these sorts of areas,” Fringe creative producer Emily Sexton said. According to Doig, perfomer Tobias Manderson-Galvin – who plays Hitlerhoff – was a “98-pound weakling” who was “not the exercising kind”, but with particular enthusiasm for the role he has been carbo-loading, going to the gym and using a personal trainer. “I really hope I haven’t created a monster,” Doig said. “If I have I’m not the first.”

A video distributer who supplied Michael Jackson with his home entertainment in the form of VHS movies is revealing what was on MJ’s daily movie menu. Some of Michael’s viewing pleasures included Judy Garland TV Specials and dramas depicting troubled male youths, those selections may not surprise most, however what is surprising is MJ’s lust for Nazi documentaries. Some of the Hitler fun romps included titles such as “Hitler’s Children,” “Nazis — Of Pure Blood” and “Oasis of the Zombies”

In the 1990s Norman Scherer owned the video sales company that landed an account to fill big orders for a “famous” client. The middle-man in the deal demanded Scherer be discreet. Scott Schaffer, who was Jackson’s personal assistant and the one in charge of locating the video tapes confirmed the client was Jackson, “He had a really good collection,” Schaffer told The NY Post, “I knew what [Jackson] wanted.”

Coca-Cola promotes drink with 'swastika' robots

A Coca-Cola promotion in Hong Kong featuring a robot adorned with 'swastikas' has been condemned.

Rabbi Yakkov Kermaier, of Ohel Leah Synagogue, says it is probably an honest mistake, but he's called toy sets featuring the "Robocon" characters unacceptable.

One character, the robot-like "Robowaru," has two swastikas on its chest and can be bought in the UK for around £2.60 with any purchase of six bottles of Coke.

The figurines stand on small plastic pedestals with Coca-Cola logos on them.

"It's not simply a politically incorrect symbol," Rabbi Kermaier said. "It's an emblem that represents the wholesale slaughter of six million Jews."

Rabbi Kermaier acknowledged the Nazi swastika can easily be confused with Buddhist swastikas that are common in Asia. The two symbols are close to being reverse images of one another, with the arms pointing in opposite directions.

Coca-Cola says the figurines were made according to the original Robowaru design, but a spokeswoman declined any other immediate comment.

Animation International, which sells rights for Robocon and worked with Coca-Cola on the toys, says the symbols were designed by the creator and "did not have anything to do with any organisation or religion."

For some reason the thought of the Swastika Laundry came into my mind the other day.

For those unaware of this particular slice of Irish material culture the Swastika Laundry was a venerable institution in Dublin, founded in 1912. It operated from Shelbourne Road in Dublin 4 and remained in business until the late 1960s. I remember vividly the cream and brown coloured labels they used to tag their deliveries and the electric vans that they were delivered in. Now, seeing as this would have been 1967 or 8 it must have been just prior to their eventual demise.

And quite a sight the labels and vans were too, emblazoned with that most remarkable of symbols, the…er…swastika. The photograph below is available on the Dublin City Council website, and depicts the livery of the company on a van used in the series “Caught in a Free State”. I certainly don’t remember the vans as being red, so perhaps this was a previous livery that the company used (or perhaps they overdid the look to make it more Nazi-like – but even so the Swastika remained the symbol of the company).

According to an Irish Times report from some years ago the Laundry changed it’s name in 1939 to Swastika Laundry (1912), perhaps in an effort to preempt a successful German invasion of launderers fired up on National Socialism, and ready to orient the Swastika in the opposite direction.

Because it is strange, but true, to consider that the Swastika laundry used the Swastika in it’s original configuration.

Even more strange is the thought that the brick chimney at Shelbourne Road was also decorated with a Swastika and the name of the company up until the late 1960s. Irish Eagle has a photograph which I hope I can get a scan of of just that location.

So what was it about? The logo was introduced at a time well before it’s association with National Socialism. It was a symbol of good luck, originating in India. It was configured facing left to right which is the correct Indian orientation.

Yet it’s hard not to believe, if only judging from the way in which the van above, which would date from the post-War period, is decorated with the Swastika set within a white roundel with two horizontal bars on either side and set against a red field in an almost exact emulation of the Nazi symbol, that the most unpleasant connotations of the symbolism were being – at best – parodied.

So here we have it. Ireland’s capital city, graced with laundry vans plying their trade hither and yon decorated in arguably the most reviled political symbol of human history.

In some respects it speaks of an innocence regarding the power of visual symbolism. But it is difficult to judge at this remove the true motivation behind it’s use. Was it a sense that the Swastika Laundry had it first and therefore it had some ‘ownership’ of the image? It certainly tends to indicate an insularity as to the significations of the Swastika, and perhaps within a culture that reified the written and spoken word over the visual this isn’t quite so surprising.

And it raises interesting and troubling questions regarding the nature of other imagery that has political connotations.

Well, this is embarrassing for the Bavarian town of Aßling: Someone trampled a swastika the size of a tennis court into a cornfield there. Now everyone who flies over think they're neo-Nazis. Unless they think alien neo-Nazis did it?

Swastikas are illegal in Germany and punishable with up to three years in jail, so police are investigating. According to The Daily Mail, "The swastika is so perfectly aligned that authorities believe they are dealing with hard-core neo-Nazis, rather than drunken yobs." Only hard-core fascists can walk in straight lines? That isn't a reference to goose stepping, is it? [Daily Mail]

Cuban billboard comparing Bush to Hitler. I thought the whole anti-Hitler trope was motivated largely by Communists using their #1 bogeyman as a constant specter for political motivation, but the American right, or what calls itself right has compared Obama to Hitler over & over again, using the concept of "socialism" as the connective tissue between Obama & Der Fuehrer. As we say, Bush & Obama are no Hitler, on any level imaginable, outside of being public figures. I do have theories about how the servile nationalism & servile born-again Christianism tend towards a Communist feeling coming from the right, & most of their leaders are former Trotskyites, possibly constructing the world's largest dialectical conflict in the USA in order to bring about a Communist revolution (maybe?), but either way, who knows what the hell is going on?
